Tooth ache
A toothache is characterized by pain in or around a tooth, often the initial symptom indicating dental issues such as cavities (krimidanta), abscesses (upakusa), gum problems (danta moola roga), or cracked teeth (danta bheda). Ayurveda, specifically in the branch of Shalakya Tantra dealing with head, mouth, eye, nose, and throat diseases, acknowledges toothache as a significant condition.
Prevention being preferable to cure, Ayurveda recommends specific practices for dental hygiene. While conventional brushing with toothpaste is common, alternatives include toothbrushes made from plant parts like Azadirachta indica, Salvadora persica, Acacia catechu, Ficus, and Pongamia pinnata. Alternatively, herbal powders can be used effectively for brushing, providing protection against various dental ailments.
For those suffering from tooth sensitivity, oil pulling with medicated oils is recommended as it addresses the underlying causes of pain. Ayurvedic preparations such as Khadira Gulika and arimedadi taila are well-regarded for their efficacy in treating toothache. Single herbs such as ginger, clove, and turmeric have demonstrated effective therapeutic properties in treating various tooth diseases.
